What is AviClear?
AviClear by Cutera is a medical laser built specifically to treat acne. It uses a 1726 nm wavelength, which is absorbed by sebum, the oil your skin produces. That lets it gently heat and shrink the overactive oil glands that drive breakouts, while the surface of your skin is protected by built-in cooling. It is cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for mild, moderate and severe acne, and it was the first laser of its kind to receive that clearance.
Because it works on the cause rather than individual spots, a single course of three sessions is designed to reduce breakouts over the long term. We offer AviClear at our Coleraine clinic for adults with persistent acne and breakouts, including people whose skin has not settled with creams, antibiotics or other treatments.
Who AviClear can help
AviClear is designed for active, inflammatory acne on the face, from mild to severe, in all skin types and tones. It is not designed to treat existing acne scars or blackheads and whiteheads alone, so we will assess your skin and confirm it is the right approach at your consultation.
How AviClear works
Most acne starts in the sebaceous glands, which make the oil that clogs pores and feeds inflammation. AviClear is designed to calm these glands down at the source.
Targets the oil glands
The 1726 nm wavelength is absorbed by sebum more than by the surrounding skin, so the laser can heat the overactive oil glands precisely and reduce how much oil they produce.
Protects the skin surface
Built-in contact cooling chills the skin with every pulse, protecting the surface and keeping treatment comfortable. Because the wavelength is not drawn to pigment, it can be used on all skin types and tones.
Results that build over time
Breakouts usually reduce gradually over the months after your course. Individual results vary.
Your AviClear treatment, step by step
Consultation
We assess your acne, talk through your medical history and any acne medicines you use or have used, including isotretinoin, and confirm AviClear is right for you. Your consultation is complimentary.
Preparation
Your skin is cleansed and you wear protective eyewear. No numbing cream is needed, and we set the treatment to suit your skin.
Your treatment
The handpiece moves across the treatment area, cooling the skin with each pulse. Most people feel brief heat and snapping. A session takes around 30 minutes, and your course is three sessions spaced a few weeks apart.
Aftercare and results
Some redness or mild swelling usually settles within hours. A short-lived flare of breakouts can happen in the weeks afterwards, which is expected. Keep a gentle routine with daily SPF, and results continue to build for months.

AviClear FAQs
Does AviClear hurt?
Most people describe brief heat and a snapping sensation with each pulse. The handpiece cools your skin throughout, numbing cream is not needed, and each session takes around 30 minutes.
Is there any downtime?
Little to none. Your skin may look a little red or puffy for a few hours, and most people go straight back to work or their normal routine. You can usually wear make-up the next day.
How many sessions will I need?
A standard AviClear course is three sessions, spaced a few weeks apart. Unlike many acne treatments, it is not designed as an ongoing monthly treatment, although we will review your skin after your course and advise if anything else would help.
When will I see results?
Some people notice fewer breakouts during their course, but results build gradually over the following months as the oil glands calm down. In the manufacturer’s clinical study, around nine in ten patients saw visible improvement six and twelve months after treatment. Individual results vary.
Will my acne get worse before it gets better?
It can. Some people have a temporary flare of breakouts in the weeks after a session as the skin responds. This is expected and usually settles, and we will support you through it.
Is AviClear suitable for my skin type?
AviClear is suitable for all skin types and tones, because its wavelength targets oil rather than pigment. It is not suitable during pregnancy or if you have an active skin infection, and if you have taken isotretinoin recently, you will need to wait before starting. We check all of this at your consultation.
Does AviClear treat acne scars?
No. AviClear is designed to treat active acne and reduce future breakouts, which also lowers the chance of new scars. For existing scarring, we offer Secret RF microneedling and Secret PRO, usually once your acne is under control. See our guide to acne scarring.
Can I keep using my skincare and acne treatments?
Usually, yes. Many people continue a gentle skincare routine, and we may recommend medical-grade products to support your results. Please tell us about every medicine and active product you use so that we can plan your sessions safely.
