What are fine lines and wrinkles?
Fine lines are shallow creases in the surface of the skin, while wrinkles are deeper folds that develop as the skin loses firmness. They are among the most common reasons people visit an aesthetic clinic, and most of us begin to notice them from our late twenties or thirties.
Doctors usually describe two types. Dynamic lines appear when you move your face, for example frown lines between the brows, forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. Over years of repeated movement, and as collagen declines, these can become static lines that stay visible even when your face is at rest. Lines around the mouth, lips and neck are also common.
Fine lines and wrinkles are a normal part of life and a sign of an expressive face, so treatment is always a personal choice. They are one part of the wider picture of ageing skin. At our Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry clinics, fine lines and wrinkles treatment begins with a consultation to understand which type of lines you have, because that decides which option is likely to help.
What causes fine lines and wrinkles?
Lines form where repeated facial movement meets skin that is gradually becoming thinner and less elastic. Several factors add to this over time.
Facial expression
Every smile, frown and raised brow folds the skin in the same places. Over many years these repeated movements etch lines into the skin.
Collagen and elastin loss
From our mid-twenties the skin gradually makes less collagen and elastin, so it is less able to smooth out creases once the movement stops.
Sun exposure
Ultraviolet light breaks down collagen and is one of the main causes of early lines, especially around the eyes and on the forehead.
Dryness and smoking
Dry skin makes fine lines more visible, while smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and the repeated pursing action adds to lines around the lips.
Treatments for fine lines and wrinkles at A Aesthetics
Every plan starts with a medical assessment, because dynamic lines, static lines and crepey skin each respond to different approaches. These are the options our team most often recommends, sometimes in combination.
Consultation for expression lines
Lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes are caused by muscle movement. A doctor or nurse prescriber assesses these face to face and explains the options suitable for you.
Secret RF
Radiofrequency microneedling encourages the skin to produce new collagen, which can gradually soften fine lines and improve texture. It suits static lines and crepey skin, with only short downtime.
Secret PRO
Combines radiofrequency microneedling with CO2 laser resurfacing to renew the skin surface and support collagen deeper down. It suits more established lines, for example around the mouth, when a few days of recovery is possible.
Polynucleotides
PhilArt polynucleotides support skin repair and can improve elasticity and hydration in delicate areas. They suit fine, crepey lines under the eyes and on the neck, where other options may be less suitable.
Skin boosters
Hyaluronic acid skin boosters hydrate the skin from within, which can make fine dehydration lines less visible. They suit people whose lines look worse when the skin is dry or tired.
Dermal filler
Small amounts of hyaluronic acid filler can soften deeper folds, such as the lines from nose to mouth, by restoring support beneath them. Filler suits static lines linked to volume loss rather than movement.
Everyday tips for managing fine lines and wrinkles
Wear sunscreen every day
A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, used daily and reapplied when you are outdoors, helps protect collagen from UV damage. Sunglasses also reduce squinting around the eyes.
Consider a retinoid
Cosmetic retinol, introduced slowly a few nights a week, is one of the best-studied skincare ingredients for fine lines. Avoid it in pregnancy and ask us which strength suits your skin.
Keep skin moisturised
Well-hydrated skin reflects light better and fine lines look softer. Look for moisturisers with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin or ceramides.
Look after your whole self
Not smoking, sleeping well and eating a balanced diet all support healthy collagen. Sleeping on your back can also reduce creasing on one side of the face.
Fine lines and wrinkles FAQs
What is the difference between dynamic and static lines?
Dynamic lines only show when you move your face, for example when you frown or smile. Static lines are visible even when your face is relaxed, usually because collagen has declined and the crease has become etched in. The difference matters because they often respond to different treatments.
Can fine lines and wrinkles be prevented?
You cannot stop lines forming completely, but you can slow them down. Daily sun protection, not smoking, a good moisturiser and a retinoid used as advised all help. Starting good habits early tends to make the biggest difference.
Which treatment is best for my lines?
It depends on the type, depth and location of your lines. Expression lines on the upper face are assessed at a medical consultation, while fine static lines and crepey skin may suit Secret RF or polynucleotides. We will recommend a plan after assessing your skin in person.
What results can I expect?
The aim is softer, smoother-looking lines while you still look like yourself and can express emotion naturally. Results vary between people, and deep, long-standing lines usually improve rather than disappear. Collagen-based treatments build gradually over several weeks.
How many sessions will I need?
Skin-quality treatments such as Secret RF, skin boosters and polynucleotides are usually given as a short course of sessions a few weeks apart. We will explain your plan in detail before you start.
Are treatments safe for my skin type?
Most of our treatments for lines can be adapted for a wide range of skin types and tones, but every treatment carries some risks and not everyone is suitable. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, some medical conditions and some medications may rule out certain options. Our medical team checks this carefully at your consultation.
Can I combine treatments for lines?
Yes. Combining treatments often gives a more balanced result, for example improving skin quality with skin boosters or Secret PRO. If lines are part of wider changes, our guide to ageing skin explains the bigger picture.
