What is ageing skin?
Ageing skin describes the gradual changes in the structure and function of your skin that happen to everyone over time. From our mid-twenties, the skin slowly makes less collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep it firm and springy. Cell turnover slows, the skin holds on to less moisture, and the fat and bone beneath it gradually change shape.
Rather than one single concern, ageing skin is the whole picture. It can show as fine lines and wrinkles, a rougher or duller texture, uneven tone and sun spots, softer contours and loosening skin, and a loss of fullness in areas such as the cheeks and temples. How and when these changes appear varies widely from person to person, shaped by genetics, sun exposure and lifestyle.
Ageing is completely natural and never something you need to treat. Many people simply want their skin to look healthier, fresher and more like they feel. At our Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry clinics, ageing skin treatment always starts with a careful assessment of your skin quality, laxity, facial structure and goals, so any plan is realistic and tailored to you.
What causes ageing skin?
Skin ageing comes from two things working together: natural, internal ageing that we cannot change, and external factors such as sunlight and lifestyle, which we can often influence.
Less collagen and elastin
From our mid-twenties the skin gradually produces less collagen and elastin, so it becomes thinner, less firm and slower to spring back.
Slower cell renewal
Skin cells are replaced more slowly with age, which can leave the complexion looking duller and rougher, with less ability to hold moisture.
Sun exposure
Ultraviolet light speeds up collagen breakdown and is a major cause of visible ageing, including wrinkles, sun spots and uneven tone.
Lifestyle and structural change
Smoking, poor sleep and ongoing stress can add to skin ageing, while natural changes in facial fat and bone alter the contours of the face over time.
Treatments for ageing skin at A Aesthetics
Every plan starts with a medical assessment, because the right treatment depends on which changes matter most to you. Often a combination works best, addressing skin quality, firmness and volume in stages. These are the options our team most often recommends.
Secret PRO
Combines radiofrequency microneedling with CO2 laser resurfacing to encourage collagen renewal and improve texture, fine lines and firmness. It suits people who want a noticeable refresh and can allow a few days of recovery.
Polynucleotides
PhilArt polynucleotides are designed to support the skin’s own repair processes, helping to improve hydration, elasticity and overall skin quality. They suit thinner or tired-looking skin, including delicate areas such as under the eyes and the neck.
Skin boosters
Fine injections of hyaluronic acid hydrate the skin from within and can improve its smoothness and glow. A good choice if your skin feels dry or crepey, or lacks radiance.
Dermal filler
Hyaluronic acid filler can gently restore support where volume has been lost, for example in the cheeks, temples or around the mouth. Used conservatively for a natural look, it suits people whose main concern is hollowing or softer contours.
EMFACE
A needle-free BTL treatment that uses radiofrequency and muscle stimulation to support firmer-looking skin and facial tone. It suits people who would like a subtle lift without injections or downtime.
Laser Genesis
A gentle Cutera laser that warms the deeper skin to improve texture, redness and overall tone over a course of sessions. It suits people who want brighter, more even skin with no downtime.
Everyday tips for managing ageing skin
Protect from the sun daily
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with good UVA protection every day, even when it is cloudy. It is one of the most effective ways to slow visible skin ageing.
Keep a simple, steady routine
A gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and one or two well-chosen active ingredients, used consistently, usually do more than a long list of products. We can advise on medical-grade skincare suited to you.
Avoid smoking
Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin and contributes to collagen breakdown. Stopping at any age is good for your skin as well as your overall health.
Sleep, eat well and stay hydrated
Good sleep, a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables, and enough water all support healthy skin. Small, steady habits make a real difference over time.
Ageing skin FAQs
At what age does skin start to age?
Collagen production gradually starts to fall from around our mid-twenties, but visible changes usually appear later and at very different rates. Genetics, sun exposure, smoking and general health all play a part, which is why two people of the same age can have very different skin.
Can skin ageing be prevented?
Natural ageing cannot be stopped, but you can slow some of the visible signs. Daily sun protection, not smoking, a consistent skincare routine and a healthy lifestyle all help. Professional treatments can then support skin quality, but they work best alongside good daily habits.
Which treatment is best for my ageing skin?
It depends on which changes bother you most. Texture and fine lines often respond well to Secret PRO or Secret RF, dryness and dullness to skin boosters, and hollowing to dermal filler. A skin analysis and consultation help us recommend the right plan for you.
What results can I realistically expect?
The aim is healthier, fresher-looking skin that still looks like you, not a different face. Results vary from person to person, and most skin-quality treatments build gradually over several weeks as the skin renews. We will talk honestly about what is achievable at your consultation.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on the treatment and your skin. Many skin-quality treatments are given as a course, for example two to three sessions spaced a few weeks apart, followed by occasional maintenance. We will give you a clear plan and timeline before you start.
Are treatments safe for my skin type?
Many of our treatments suit a wide range of skin types and tones, but some energy-based treatments need extra care with darker skin or recent sun exposure. Every treatment carries some risks, which we explain fully. Our medical team checks your medical history and suitability before recommending anything, and some people are not suitable for certain treatments.
Can treatments be combined?
Yes, and combining treatments is often the most effective way to address the different aspects of ageing skin. For example, we may pair polynucleotides for skin quality with EMFACE for firmness. We plan the order and timing carefully.
