What are menopause-related concerns?

The menopause is when periods stop because of falling hormone levels. It usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55, although it can happen earlier. The years leading up to it, known as the perimenopause, often bring the most noticeable changes. Alongside symptoms such as hot flushes, poor sleep and changes in mood, many women notice their skin, face, body and intimate health changing too.

Lower oestrogen affects collagen, hydration and where the body stores fat. Skin can become drier, thinner and more sensitive, with more visible fine lines and a loss of firmness. Facial volume may soften, particularly around the cheeks and jawline, and fat often shifts towards the tummy. Many women also experience vaginal dryness or a feeling of reduced intimate tone.

These changes are a natural part of life, but they can affect comfort and confidence. At our clinics in Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry we focus on the visible and comfort-related changes, with any treatment planned around the medical care you are already receiving.

What causes menopause-related changes?

Most of these changes come down to falling oestrogen, which influences how skin, muscle, fat and intimate tissue behave, combined with the natural effects of ageing.

Collagen loss

Skin loses collagen more quickly in the first years after the menopause, leading to thinner skin, more visible lines and reduced firmness.

Less hydration

Lower oestrogen reduces the skin’s natural oils and moisture, so skin can feel drier, more sensitive and slower to repair.

Changes in fat and muscle

Facial fat can thin while body fat tends to settle around the middle, and muscle mass gradually reduces unless it is actively maintained.

Intimate changes

Vaginal tissue relies on oestrogen to stay thick and elastic, so dryness and discomfort become more common.

Everyday tips for managing menopause changes

Rethink your skincare

Switch to a gentle cleanser and a richer moisturiser, and look for ingredients that support the skin barrier, such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid. Our skin analysis can help you choose.

Wear SPF every day

A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day of the year, helps protect thinner skin from further sun damage, collagen loss and pigmentation.

Stay strong and active

Strength exercises on at least two days a week help maintain muscle and bone strength, which naturally decline after the menopause, and support a healthy body shape.

Protect your sleep and wellbeing

A regular sleep routine, limiting alcohol and caffeine, and not smoking all support skin health, mood and energy through the menopause.

Menopause-related concerns FAQs

Falling oestrogen reduces collagen and moisture, so skin often becomes drier, thinner and more sensitive, with more visible lines and less firmness. Some women also notice more pigmentation or redness.

Not entirely, as they are a natural part of life, but you can slow them. Daily SPF, a barrier-supporting skincare routine, not smoking and staying active all help.

No. Hot flushes and other hormonal symptoms need medical management, which we do not provide. We focus on the visible and comfort-related changes, and plan any treatment around the care you already have.

That depends on what bothers you most. EMFEMME 360 focuses on intimate comfort. For skin, face and body changes, our guides to ageing skin, skin laxity and stubborn fat explain the options. At your consultation we will talk through your priorities and give you an honest recommendation.

Taking HRT does not usually stop you from having these treatments, but please tell us about every medicine you take, including HRT and vaginal oestrogen. We check your full medical history before recommending anything.

Treatments that stimulate collagen work gradually, so changes usually build over the weeks and months after a course. Results vary from person to person, and we will give you realistic expectations at your consultation.

Yes. Many women combine intimate treatment with a face or body treatment. We plan and space treatments so each works well and your skin has time to recover. You can also read our guides to ageing skin and skin laxity.
