What is lip filler dissolving?
Most lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a gel that the body breaks down slowly over time. Lip filler dissolving uses a prescription enzyme, injected in small amounts, to speed up that natural breakdown so unwanted filler can be reduced or removed. It is a medical procedure and should only be carried out by a doctor or nurse prescriber after a face-to-face consultation.
People consider dissolving for different reasons. Filler may have moved beyond the lip border, formed lumps, or built up over several treatments so the lips look fuller or less natural than intended. Others simply feel their lips no longer suit them and would like a fresh start. Dissolving only works on hyaluronic acid fillers, so knowing what product was used matters.
Sometimes dissolving is needed urgently, for example if filler is affecting the blood supply to the skin. At our clinics in Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry we assess your lips carefully, explain the risks, including allergic reaction, and only recommend lip dissolve treatment when it is right for you. If you have a complication from treatment elsewhere, we can assess you and refer you on where specialist care is needed.
Why do people dissolve lip filler?
Filler can behave differently in each person depending on the product, how much is used, how it was placed and how your lips move. These are the most common reasons people ask about dissolving.
Filler migration
Filler can spread above the lip border over time, creating a puffy upper lip or blurred edge. This is more likely with larger volumes or repeated top-ups.
Lumps and unevenness
Small lumps, nodules or asymmetry can develop if filler settles unevenly. Some settle with time, while others benefit from dissolving and a fresh assessment.
An overfilled look
Filler can build up over years of treatments, leaving lips looking heavier or less natural than you would like. Dissolving allows a reset before any future treatment.
Complications
Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel or trigger inflammation or infection. A blocked vessel is a medical emergency that may need urgent dissolving by a trained practitioner.
Treatment options at A Aesthetics
Every plan starts with a face-to-face medical assessment. We ask about your previous treatments and the product used, examine your lips, and check for allergies before any prescription medicine is used. Some people are not suitable, and we will always explain why.
Lip dissolve treatment
A prescription enzyme is injected precisely into the unwanted filler to help break it down, with changes usually seen over the following days. It suits people with migrated, lumpy or excess hyaluronic acid filler, and more than one session is sometimes needed.
Refined dermal filler
Once your lips have fully settled after dissolving, some people choose a small, carefully placed amount of filler for subtle shape and hydration. This is always optional and planned conservatively to respect your natural lip proportions.
Skin boosters
If your aim is softer, more hydrated skin around the mouth rather than extra volume, injectable hydration may help improve fine lines and texture. A good option for people who want freshness without fullness.
Caring for your lips before and after dissolving
Know your treatment history
Bring details of previous filler treatments, including dates and product names if you have them. This helps us plan safely, as dissolving only works on hyaluronic acid fillers.
Expect some swelling
Mild swelling, redness or tenderness is common for a day or two afterwards. A cool compress can help, and it is best to avoid make-up on the area, strenuous exercise and alcohol for the first 24 hours.
Give your lips time
Your lips may look thinner or uneven at first as swelling settles. We usually recommend waiting at least four to six weeks before considering any new filler, so we can see your natural lips clearly.
Keep lips hydrated and protected
Use a simple, fragrance-free lip balm with SPF and drink plenty of water. Avoid picking or massaging the area unless your practitioner has advised it.
Lip filler dissolving FAQs
Why does lip filler migrate or form lumps?
Migration and lumps can happen when larger volumes are used, when filler is placed too superficially, after frequent top-ups, or simply because of how your lips move. The type of product also plays a part. Choosing an experienced medical practitioner and a conservative approach reduces the likelihood.
Can problems with lip filler be prevented?
Not entirely, but the risk is lower when treatment is planned by a qualified medical practitioner, volumes are modest and top-ups are spaced sensibly. Keeping a record of the products used and attending reviews also helps spot issues early.
How is lip filler dissolved?
A prescription enzyme is injected in small amounts into the unwanted filler, where it helps break down the hyaluronic acid. It is only prescribed after a face-to-face consultation with a doctor or nurse prescriber, and an allergy check is carried out first. Read more about our lip dissolve treatment.
What results can I expect?
Filler usually starts to soften within a day or two, and the full effect is clearer once swelling settles. The enzyme can also affect some of your own natural tissue temporarily, so lips may look slightly thinner at first. More than one session is sometimes needed, particularly for older or larger amounts of filler.
Is dissolving safe?
When carried out by a trained medical practitioner, dissolving is a well-established procedure, but like any treatment it carries risks. These include swelling, bruising, tenderness and, rarely, an allergic reaction, which is why we assess your medical history and allergies first. It is not suitable for everyone, and we will explain your options honestly.
Which option is best for me?
That depends on whether you want to remove filler completely, correct a specific area, or simply refresh your lips. For some people, partial dissolving followed by a small, carefully placed amount of dermal filler gives the most natural result. Others prefer no further filler at all. We will guide you without any pressure.
Can I have filler again afterwards?
Yes, if you wish. We usually recommend waiting at least four to six weeks so swelling has fully settled and we can assess your natural lip shape. Any future treatment is planned conservatively and is entirely your choice.
