What is intimate wellness?

Intimate wellness describes the comfort, tone and health of the vulva, vagina and pelvic floor. Changes in this area are very common. Many women notice them after pregnancy and childbirth, during the perimenopause and menopause, or gradually with age, yet they are often left undiscussed because they can feel difficult to raise.

The concerns we are asked about most fall into three groups: a feeling of looseness or reduced tone (vaginal laxity), vaginal dryness and discomfort, and the wider changes of the menopause. Each has different causes, so each needs its own assessment.

These changes become a medical concern when they affect daily life, or when they come with bleeding, pain, unusual discharge, urinary symptoms or a lump. At our clinics in Coleraine and Derry/Londonderry, every intimate wellness consultation is private and unhurried, and we will always tell you if anything needs further medical investigation first.

What causes intimate health changes?

Most intimate health changes come down to a few natural life events that affect the pelvic floor muscles, the supporting tissues, and the hormones that keep vaginal and urinary tissue healthy.

Pregnancy and childbirth

Carrying a baby and vaginal delivery can stretch the pelvic floor muscles and supporting tissues. For some women this leads to reduced tone in the months and years that follow.

Menopause and lower oestrogen

Oestrogen helps keep vaginal and urinary tissue thick, elastic and moist. As levels fall during the perimenopause and menopause, tissue can become thinner, drier and more easily irritated.

Natural ageing

Collagen and elastin gradually reduce throughout the body, including in intimate tissue, and muscle strength naturally declines with age.

Health and lifestyle factors

A long-term cough, constipation, heavy lifting, carrying extra weight, some medicines and certain cancer treatments can all strain the pelvic floor or affect vaginal tissue.

Everyday tips for intimate wellness

Train your pelvic floor

Squeeze and lift the muscles you use to stop passing urine or wind, then relax fully. Doing this every day supports pelvic floor tone, and apps such as NHS Squeezy can help you keep it up.

Keep hygiene gentle

Wash the vulva with plain water or an unperfumed emollient. Avoid douches, scented washes, wipes and bubble baths, which can upset the natural balance and cause irritation.

Use moisturisers and lubricants

A vaginal moisturiser used regularly, and a lubricant when needed, can ease dryness and discomfort. Your pharmacist can help you choose one that suits sensitive skin.

Support your general health

Staying active, keeping to a healthy weight, avoiding constipation and stopping smoking all reduce strain on the pelvic floor and help keep tissue healthy.

Intimate wellness FAQs

Yes. Changes in tone and comfort are very common after pregnancy, through the menopause and with age.

That depends on the cause. Our guides to vaginal laxity, vaginal dryness and menopause-related concerns explain each in more detail.

EMFEMME 360 is a non-surgical radiofrequency treatment designed to gently warm intimate tissue, supporting blood flow and natural collagen renewal. It needs no anaesthetic and there is no downtime. Most women describe a comfortable warming sensation.

Completely. Your consultation takes place in a private room, your information is handled confidentially, and intimate treatment is carried out by a member of our medical team.

This depends on your needs and is agreed with you at your consultation. Because treatment works by supporting your body’s own renewal, any improvement develops gradually over the following weeks, and results vary from person to person.

Yes. Treatment is not suitable during pregnancy, with an active infection or undiagnosed bleeding, or for some people with implanted devices or certain medical conditions. We check your full medical history at your consultation and will tell you honestly if treatment is not right for you.
